Banana is the oldest and commonest fruit known to the mankind. It is one of the important fruits that constitutes second largest fruit industry in India. Banana contributes 37% to total fruit production in India. Other than fresh fruits, bananas can be consumed as processed in various forms like chips, powder, flakes, etc. Banana pseudo stem is chopped and used as cattle feed. The leaves of banana plant are used as plate from centuries. There are around 12 local and 30 exotic varieties are grown commercially. Based on the consumption pattern, there are two main types: the table banana and the plantain (cooking banana), and almost 1,000 varieties. Each of these types varies subtly in their taste, appearance, and even aroma.
